![]() ![]() There are numerous references to sheep in the Bible because one of the prominent occupations of the people in Biblical days is animal husbandry. That is why Jesus said, my sheep hear my voice and a stranger they will not follow ( John 10:5 ) So, on the flip side, those who are not Jesus’ sheep do not listen to Him because they do not believe in Him ( John 10:26 )īeing a part of Jesus’ sheepfold is crucial because it guarantees protection from the thief or a stranger who always pretends to be the shepherd but has a mission to kill, steal and destroy the sheep ( John 10:10 ). What qualifies believers to be part of the sheepfold is believing in Jesus Christ, His teachings, and accepting Him into their lives. So, there must be a deep level of relationship that requires constant communication for a sheep to know the shepherd’s voice, trust it, and follow it.Įvery child of God is a sheep, and Jesus is the Good Shepherd ( John 10:11 ). That is why Jesus said in John 10:27 that “My sheep hear My voice.” Without hearing, there will be no knowing. ![]() ![]() Therefore, this means that before a sheep knows a shepherd’s voice, it must have heard it frequently and spent quality time with him. Therefore, for a particular voice to register in the mind of a sheep and be distinguished from other voices means the sheep hears such a voice constantly and has been led by that voice toward a path that leads to green pastures and clean water for its nourishment. Knowing a shepherd’s voice takes time and regular interactions because there are possibly different voices flying around. The statement “My sheep know my voice” speaks about the intimacy and relationship between a shepherd and his sheep. ![]() Verses 29 and 30 affirm the sonship and deity of Jesus Christ. This partially explains the Holy Trinity and emphasizes Jesus’ divinity. Jesus’ daring statement in front of the religious critics in the temple speaks of His unity with God, the Father, by saying, “I and My Father are one.” ( John 10:30 ). He is the impenetrable tower we run to when we are in danger, and He never fails to deliver us from the enemy ( Proverbs 18:10 ) Therefore, He would try so hard to get hold of His sheep to devour them.īut, Jesus has conquered the enemy and given us victory. However, in all this, we must understand that the enemy is not happy about Jesus’ mission to give eternal life to His sheep. We must grow in His knowledge and know Him personally, recognizing His voice, listening and obeying Him when He calls. We see Jesus emphasizing the promise in John 3:16, which says, “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” To believe Jesus, we must first know Him as the Son of God sent to save the world. In Verse 28, He said He has come to give His sheep eternal life and keep them safe so no one can snatch them from His hands. John 10:27-30 meaning further points to Jesus’ purpose and His duty to His sheep. This passage emphasizes the close relationship between Jesus and His Father and highlights Jesus’ devotion to His followers and the depth of His love for them. He states that the Father loves Him because of the ultimate sacrifice He has come to offer so we might receive salvation and be saved and delivered from sin and the enemy. In this passage, Jesus is speaking to the Jews and affirming His divine nature as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and lays down His life for them.
